HELP, Positions and Scales

Sign in to disble this ad
Can someone explain positions to me in relationship to knowing scale degrees and where you are on the neck. Sorry if I am not asking this question correctly, hopefully someone can stir me in the right direction. But don't make it to difficult to understand I'm still learning.

Scale degrees and where you play on the neck aren't really related at all. You can play the b3rd of the minor scale, for example anywhere at all. What is important is the relative position of the tonic to the note that represents the b3rd of the minor scale. For example if you play Eb , then C will be your tonic.

Maybe this will help -

http://www.studybass.com/tools/chord...-note-printer/

*Navigate to tabs below the fretboard diagram.
*Click "inst" to set up your bass (4 string, 5 string, etc) and your tuning (standard, drop D, custom, etc)
*Then go to "chord" tab and select 'root' of chord (C, C#, D, Eb, whatever) and then select type/quality of chord (major, minor, minor 7, dim 7, etc)
or you can go to the "scale" tab and select a series of tones for a particular chord; select root, then scale

This site also features some short lessons on the menu at left about chord patterns if something is unclear

Hope this is what you're looking for...

Thanks Ryco. Went to that sight, and it looks like it could be fun...
