help reading treble and bass clef

Sign in to disble this ad
I can read bass clef on the bass
I can read treble clef on the classical guitar
I can't seem to read both clefs while playing bass.

Why do I want to do this? Melodies. I would like to focus on the bass but be able to read melodies from other instruments on the treble clef and play them on bass.

I find it hard switching back and forth between the clefs. I've only been able to do it successfully when I dedicate months on one or the other but on the respective instrument (bass clef = bass, treble clef = classical guitar). How do pianists read the clefs simultaneously on one instrument so easily?

Anyway, its a skill I want to have and appreciate any tips.

Thanks

It's just like anything it just takes doing it. At first your ears are catching mixing the clefs when reading, but keep working on it and you start catching yourself as you are reading, then it becomes easy. I went thru the same thing and now occasionally I will forget and have to glance quickly to see what clef I'm in. I'd say till comfortable read in both clefs daily so your brain get used to having to switch gears.

Thanks for the encouragement. I will practice it daily. I had a feeling the answer would be something like "keep practicing"... I guess I just needed to hear it from someone that actually found it worked.
