Sign in to disble this ad
hey my names Ross.

just had my first bass lesson today, i have played drums for 7 year and now i want to extend a bit.
anyway i need to be able to practice heaps so i can be good. And i don't have a bass guitar yet or a bass amp. SO i just need a little bit of advise from some of you people on this forum. thanks.
some of things i have been wondering about are:
good second hand bass vs not so good new bass
and good bass amp and not so good bass guitar/vice versa

thanks again

Get a good second hand bass. Getting a good bass is more important than a bass amp, not in the sense of a better sound, but because you will want an instrument you can play comfortably for hours. If you get a bass that does not feel comfortable, then you will have less appetite to play as well.

get what you like. you are more likely to play with what you like then what someone on TB likes.
but in general get the most expensive bass and bass rig you can afford,(oh hell this is AMERICA get the most expensive bass and bass rig you can't afford and make sure you put your house up as collateral ) and you'll get the most bang for your buck getting second hand equipment, imo.

HEY ROSS i AGREE WITH WIZAY..... GET A GOOD SECOND HAND BASS..BEING NEW AS YOU ARE..REMEMBER BASS IS A WHOLE DIFFERENT BREED OF CAT EXAMPLE WOULD BE A FENDER P OR J MAYBE A SQUIRE P OR J...IBANEZ IS A GOOD STARTER,CORT./..DONT GET CHEAP GET DECENT. AS FOR AN AMP?...GET ONE THAT HAS A HEADPHONE PLUG..I'D SAY MAYBE RANGING IN WATTS FROM 10 OR 15 UP TO 30-40.
MOST OF ALL????.......LISTEN....... THEN LISTEN AGAIN TO CD'S OF GOOD BASS PLAYERS ..PICK UP ON WHAT THEY ARE PLAYING TO ADD OR COMPLIMENT THE SONG.WATCH BASS PLAYERS LIVE SEE HOW THEY AND THE DRUMMER ARE LOCKED IN THE POCKET.

THEY AIN'T NO SONG WITHOUT THE BOTTOM END.

Start with a use bass - something that has a decent neck but looks like crap would work... a small practice amp and get to woodshedding. You can always buy bigger/better later. But do find something with a straight neck. Perhaps lining up a teacher first to help you buy might be a good idea (I did that students now and again).

good luck
