Hi. I'm new and I have a lot of bad habits to undo.

Hello. New guy.

Cliff Notes background: Long time guitar player. Eared everything, got fairly proficient without ever learning the formalities (theory, reading, etc). Oddly enough, always loved rhythm and bass but my early course was set by my parents, who insisted on guitar without ever bothering to insist I do it right. I do thank them for their enthusiasm in that regard, but I wish they had been a bit more open minded to what I wanted, perhaps allowing me to do both guitar and bass.

So, I'm all grown up now and can do as I please. Bought the instrument I wanted (and let me add here- I am the furthest thing from a gear-queer. These days, I'm a one-gun sort of cowboy) set it up how I wanted it set up and started playing. Having an intermediate/intermediate-advanced fingerstyle guitar background allowed me to improvise some neat stuff quickly, but I realized that this is the path to sucking at bass.
I want more.
I want to 'get it', so, learning from my past mistakes, I'm going to do the bass right.

From square one.

So, I come here to ask experienced bassists a question a mile wide and an inch deep; where is square one?

Thanks.

Get yourself a teacher. He/she can focus on specifics that you can't get from a website or the TB forum.

Get a teacher! Obviously if you play fingerstyle, right hand technique is totally different from guitar. And the right hand is everything.

Left hand is also very different from guitar and the best bassists have very relaxed, efficient left hands.

If you are in Chicago, PM me and I can give you a few suggestions.

I bought a fretless neck off ebay that someone obviously did themselves. Fantastic workmanship and I'm totally pleased with it, but the action seems high'ish, even after adjusting the saddles.

I get the feeling the nut should be replaced or reslotted to account for the removal of the frets and summary increase in depth between the string and the fingerboard. Is this correct?
