Hjalp! What do I do?! Tab question about Love Games by Level 42!

I saw this in a piece of tab. Now, I used to be REALLY good at tablature, but since I began using sheet music, I have completely forgotten how to play from tabs.


Anyway, the tab is this:

Stupid question, but how do I play the x's?

I've tried listening to the recording but without knowing WHAT I'm listening to, I'm stuck.

Play these "fake notes" by lightly muting the string as you thump/slap it. You can use some left hand fingers or the heel of your right hand, depending what you find easiest and what sounds best.

Just avoid muting with only one lefthand finger or you might make harmonics by accident (depending where you touch the string of course).
