How do you know when to advance?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm finishing up my first basic instruction DVD and have really gotten into it. How does one know when to get a more advanced disc, anopther basic one that tehes different stuff or should I go for specific techniques?

I only spent a few days on one. Maybe a week total but about 2 to 3 hours on each.

Suggestions? Comments? Advice?

I am thinking about getting a teacher as well.

If you can perform a task/exercise comfortably, cleanly, and effortlessly, then IMO you have fairly well got it. Having said that, it is always a good idea to go back now and then and do these exercises again, in order to keep them fresh. As for specific techniques, that depends on the music you want to play etc, but there is no harm in having lots of weapons in your armoury.

DVDs and taking lessons is a good way to learn. But the best way, IMHO, is to play with as many different people in various conditions and styles. As for the question about how you know you have made a progress: I´d say, when you can easily perform a technique in a band situation, still locked with the drummer and without loosing your ear for the other musicians or the song, THEN you are capable of this technique

When you can do it go get something else. Music is a journey best taken one step at a time. If you get too far ahead, stop and go back a step or two. The material you've purchased will be waiting on you when ever you get ready for it. Others have said if you teach yourself your instructor does not know what he is doing. Yes an instructor will save you a lot of time.

Just depends on your hobby budget how much help you get. Couple of months back Ed Friedland and I spent some time together, Carol Kaye and I are now working together. We are doing this through their publications, knee to knee would be best, but, there is that budget thing.

Have fun.
