I just went to YouTube and searched for "slap bass lesson"

There are many there for different ability levels. Check this one out for beginners:

Search. Not trying to be mean, just saying. I'm not too good at explaining things without having the actual person in front of me (nor am I a good bassist ) but a quick search with the term "slap" should give you a lot of results. I'm not too sure, but try searching General Instruction and Technique.

The Tony Oppenheim book is a good place to start.

Hiya, I have a few popular slap and pop lessons:

http://mrlamius.blogspot.com/2008/02...p-lesson1.html

Three lessons for beginners, then stuff on precicion, and dynamics.

At the moment, i'm doing exercises for precision.

Hope they help!

Save yourself hours of aggrevation and make sure your arm & wrist are paralell to to the strings and not like the "Flea" 90 degree angle. Man that just irks me when I see people play like that. Such a waste.

Go to musicdojo.com and take one of Anthony Wellingtons "Slap" courses. Anthony will teach you how to slap like a pro in a month!

If you ever get to meet him, do it!

I'd say do what is most comfortable to you, physicaly.

Nothing wrong with Flea's style. He's done well from it. Not a bad bass player, either.

Mix it up. I do the flea thing sometimes, or play parallel.

Most of all, don't let people belittle you in any way. Have fun!

Good luck!

I believe it comes with a DVD as well. It's like snapping your fingers, once you figure it out you'll wonder why you ever thought it was hard. Thing is though, probably a good reason to go take some prof lessons at this point. Fact is I still can't snap my fingers, though I can S&P to an extent on the bass. In a nutsehell..you're using the outside bone on the first thumb joint to hit the string against the last (or next to last or so) fret.

Yeah, I just recently learned how to do it. You do use the first joint on your thumb. Make sure your hand is relaxed and hit the string and pull away as quickly as possible. If you force your thumb it'll deaden the string.

Watch Dmanlamius' videos. They're helpful.

Go to the "Technique" sub-forum here on TalkBass and read this sticky.
Useful info for all slap styles and levels!
