I recently took some lessons and had to drive an hour to find a (very)competent teacher. Price was similar, but definitely got my money's worth!

Seems kind of steep to me. I pay $15 for a half hour, and drive 8 miles.

I would say it depends a lot on why kind of teacher. A beginning/intermediate teacher is probably in the $25-40/ hour range, and there are more of them, so easier to find close to you.

I'm taking some lessons with a guy who charges $80/hr and lives 45 minutes from my house. I think it'll be worth it, I'll know better when I've had a few more lessons.

About 60min drive for me and 40 bucks an hour for the lessons. But I feel its well worth it for this guy.

Wow...I pay $75 a month (1 half hour lesson each week). I drive 2-3 minutes, the music shop is literally the next street over and about two blocks down.

I drive 45min (each way) and pay $25.00 per 1/2 hr. Money well spent and the instructor is a moster player as well as teacher. Now if I only had more time to practice.

My drummer/percussionist drives from southern CT to Boston to study with an African percussion teacher for $60 an hour once a week. 3 hours one way.

I used to travel 2 hrs each way for a lesson and IIRC, it was $25 per half hour (back in the 80's).

About 6 yrs ago, I used to travel 1.5 hrs each way and it was $75 per hour.

The cost is going to depend on the teacher and the level at which you're studying.

Most of the time you get what you pay for. If the teacher is good, $45 an hour is a deal. Driving an hour each way should not be a deal breaker.

I pay $25 for a half hour, but since I'm the last lesson of the night, he often gives me free time afterward if we're in the middle of something. I return the favor by not asking for refunds for the times he cancels. I figure it balances.

Even better that I only have to go about 5 miles.

Given the type of player he is and, more importantly, the kind of teacher he is, my lessons are a bargain.

I drive about 45miles and pay $30 for 1/2 hour. Worth every penny and mile. Best money I have spent on music probably ever!!

$25/hr and I travel an hour and a half each way to new jersey. I have the same teacher as dave64o. The man is superior in every way.
