The Stylus magazine's top 50 basslines..

http://www.stylusmagazine.com/feature.php?ID=1843

guess there's enough in there to keep you busy for the rest of your life!

NOTE: Please note that this is "Stylus Magazine's Top 50 basslines". Not mine, or yours or Mr.Jones' who lives down the block. I am sure you might disagree on some choices, but hey, it's their list!

Yeah... right. Not agreeing with most of that list. I mean M/A/R/R/S – Pump Up the Volume? Seriously? Not only is it a synth, but it's looped. Y-A-W-N.

I question the list, the source, and the criteria.

I can play 30, 28, and 1.

28, 26, and 1

But I don't think that is a very good list. Who puts anything above the mighty floyd?

But please, please, don't let this turn into yet another "the best bass line ever" debate.

1,3,9,12,21,28,37,39,and kinda a bit of 42

I like these types of lists, I find them interesting. I disagree often and gawk at some of the omissions made, but, hey, there are some cool basslines on there.

Even Pump Up The Volume is a cool bassline (granted it is repetitive and NOT a bass guitar) but there is no denying it is catchy.

Where is "Groove Is In The Heart" - C'mon, Bootsy man.

I know 1, 3, 9, 12 (and as much as I love them, there's no way the Breeders should be that high up on any list), 16, 22, 28, 38, 39, and kinda-sorta-ish 42. Very few of these seem like they'd be all that tough to learn, though there are a few.

This list is obviously faulty as none of my basslines have been listed. A gross omission I am sure they will someday rectify.

Oh and is the question "can you play" or is it really "do you know"? I don't know several on the list but I can assure you that if I wish I can play the line. One has not been written yet that I can't play with some reasonable practice time invested.

I agree with a couple other posters thought that lists like this are fun so don't take my reply the wrong way.

Music websites must love making "Of All Time" lists. They inevitably attract lots of new visitors without requiring much effort to write. Great bang for their editorial buck.

But in this case it seems like it would have been more accurate to call it "The Top 50 Basslines In Our Small, Hipster-Oriented Record Collections".

Not a single line by Paul McCartney on that list? I call B.S. on it. I guess these lists are all very subjective but I could think of many basslines that deserve to be on it more. I do like the inclusion of one from The Sea and Cake, though.

lol at their description of "money". it's pretty well known that the recorded version of that song was gilmore, although waters played it live.

wack list, but...

BUT BERNADETTE!!!!!!!!!!

THEY INCLUDED BERNADETTE!!!!!!!

awesome.

every bassist should learn bernadette with one rh finger on a pbass with high action.

puts hair on your chest (sory, girls,) and gives you elevated respect for the baddest and least appreciated cat of all bassdome.

Given, alot of people know Jamerson now, but it wasn't that way, even 10 years ago.

Sorry for screaming.

fwfw I know about 16 of those lines. And some of em are questionable for a top 50 list... Nice Tom Jenkinson inclusion, though!
