How many ways to play a C7 arpeggio are there, Mr. Owl?

Sign in to disble this ad
Its not a trick question, and there is a real answer to how many different ways there are to play all the notes in a C7 (or any triad or seventh chord).

Not positions, but playing the notes - C,E,G,Bb then C,E,Bb,G etc. etc.

How many are there?

Find out with them all written out and with a sound file:

It's a basic math problem. 4x3x2x1=24 ways if you play the 4 notes within an octave.

Yup, aka N! or factorial.

For a triad it is six + 3X2X1 (those are up there too)
7th chord = 24 (there is also the minor 7 version up there as well)
9th chord/pentatonic scale = 1X2X3X4X5 = 120
Triad Pair - 1X2X3X4X5X6 = 720

You can see them all written out, and get them in all the keys too thanks to the guys at bopland.org and their very cool lick player that transposes auto-magically. All at the link in the first post.

For walking lines, these chord tone patterns are great. Solos too.

How do you search for stuff on bopland? I've only gotten a few thing to actually get results.

You might have better results here:

http://my.bopland.org/timeline

http://my.bopland.org/timeline?type=...tern=&site=&q=

There are 3 pages of bass licks.

and look for things like "Cmin7", and that will return anything with that in the progression.

Also, you can change any lick to bass clef by changing the source code of the lick, it is only plain text, so just put "bass lick" instead of lick and they will be in bass clef instead.
