I shape them daily, looking for snags or bumps along the curve. I trim them about once every ten days, or so. I control the clack with my mids.
That's on my plucking hand. My fretting nails stay short.

| | | | At least a couple of times a week ... I'm a cardiology nurse and haven't had "nails" since my wedding 14 years ago. Enough sharp objects and germ vectors to worry about already!
I've been playing bass 9 months and have really had to learn to protect my fingers from daily wear and tear, though. Gloves are my friend. |

| | | | Yes; zombie thread indeed. But there's still info to pass along. I play exclusively with fingers, but I use the portion about 1/4 - 1/2 inch from the nail (and I dig in hard for the most part). If I cut my nails too short, I find that there's not enough "counter" support for the flesh of my fingers and I develop blisters more readily. I never actually use the nail portion, but I generally leave it with some white showing to support the flesh of the fingertips I use.

When playing guitar, I can't stand the feel of my nails digging into the neck. On bass, I don't like catching the strings when I don't mean to, and if I want a pick sound, I'll use a pick, so short they stay.

| | | | I cut my fingernails fairly often for both bass playing and my work. I work with my hands, and having long fingernails becomes bothersome fast, so they never even approach an 1/8" in length, ever. I usually cut them once ever week or two. |

Right hand(picking hand): whenever the nails start hitting the strings. I usually cut at a slight angle so if I pluck with my hand parallel to the bass body, all finger and if I tilt my hand slightly...I get some nail-on-string pick-like sound.
