How funny! I use those nail blocks with various grit on each side. I also polish the nails so they look nice to folks watching them work. Rarely use clippers..always jacking up my finger tips up trying to cut the nail short.

Well, I'm also a guitar player, so I like a little nail, but only about 1mm for bass playing. I shape them daily, looking for snags or bumps along the curve. I trim them about once every ten days, or so. I control the clack with my mids.

That's on my plucking hand. My fretting nails stay short.

At least a couple of times a week ... I'm a cardiology nurse and haven't had "nails" since my wedding 14 years ago. Enough sharp objects and germ vectors to worry about already!

I've been playing bass 9 months and have really had to learn to protect my fingers from daily wear and tear, though. Gloves are my friend.

Yes; zombie thread indeed. But there's still info to pass along. I play exclusively with fingers, but I use the portion about 1/4 - 1/2 inch from the nail (and I dig in hard for the most part). If I cut my nails too short, I find that there's not enough "counter" support for the flesh of my fingers and I develop blisters more readily. I never actually use the nail portion, but I generally leave it with some white showing to support the flesh of the fingertips I use.

Whenever they start extending beyond my finger tip. When playing guitar, I can't stand the feel of my nails digging into the neck. On bass, I don't like catching the strings when I don't mean to, and if I want a pick sound, I'll use a pick, so short they stay.

As often as I need to. Good to keep clippers in your case or bag.

Left hand, frequently. I grow out the nail on my right index finger to use as a sort of pick.

I cut my fingernails fairly often for both bass playing and my work. I work with my hands, and having long fingernails becomes bothersome fast, so they never even approach an 1/8" in length, ever. I usually cut them once ever week or two.

Left hand: whenever I notice the 3rd finger getting "snagged" on a string when playing faster passages.
Right hand(picking hand): whenever the nails start hitting the strings. I usually cut at a slight angle so if I pluck with my hand parallel to the bass body, all finger and if I tilt my hand slightly...I get some nail-on-string pick-like sound.
