how old were you when you began teaching?

first off: i did a search, and there were some questions answered, regarding attracting students (that sounds kind of pedophile doesnt it?), and styles and all that, but i have more inquiries.

i have replied to two craigslist ads regarding teachers wanted. i got no reply from either. one of the places was weird, and i think it went out of business or something, but the other was legitimate, and didnt reply.

i have never taught bass, but have been playing a dozen or so years. i know my theory, am very good at most all right hand techniques, advanced and simple (working on tapping, as i always thought it was worthless, but now i need it).

i dont want to do this full time. i dont want a ton of students. i would prefer beginners, or close to it, because thats when i got instruction, and i feel i benefited from it greatly. i want to work through a local shop, not my house.

i am patient, and can wait until something opens up at a local shop, but i want to hear from people who have hired teachers, or people that know a lot about this. i am not leaving santa cruz. i am a lifer for sure. i am also 25. would they be worried about me just leaving down the road, or are they looking for older instructors? i have no experience teaching, but you have to start somewhere.

right now, i am looking into getting lessons on how to teach bass. i know this will help me help my prospective students better, but do music shops even care about something like that? i would be happy getting months of lessons on how to teach if it means i can pass on something i love so much.

so, i guess the big question is, will age be a factor? will i be seen as someone that could leave town and therefore leave my students stranded?

thanks.

I would say professionalism is more important than age. So, having an organized plan, timeliness, mostly pro appearance, good communication with the parents, etc.

I wouldn't care if I studied with someone younger than me (47) if they had their act together. Go for it.
