How to play these notes please

Sign in to disble this ad
I started working on a song tonight, just for sight reading practice really, but I got to something I don't know how to play.

first note is eighth g (first string open) tied to eight g (fourth string, 3rd fret).

How do I make that happen? This song is full of this type of "combo" with F's one octave apart played as eigths (I'm assuming eights). This combo is then followed by a quarter of the lower octave, then a quarter of the higher octave (usually f and g).

Is this just a question of my slowness for the eighths? I can make the 1/4's ok, though I'm often hitting the D string in getting to the g or f

thanks

Use a different string fret combo. For instance, try playing those first eight G's on the fifth fret of the D string, followed by eight on the third fret E string.

Same notes, easier to play.

Use cross-over notes between the two G's, for example G open followed by D open (D always sounds good with G because it's the 5th note of the G chord), followed by A open (optionally - the 2nd note of the G chord creating a bit of tension), followed by G on the 3rd string. The nice thing is that you can achieve your 1/8 speed requirement by dragging the same finger from the G-string to the A string before fretting the G. And crossover notes ALWAYS sound nice!

The trick, as mentioned in the first reply, is to setup the best string position. You should have both notes (low and octave) fretted at the same time, then practice quickly hitting them back and forth.

Your fingers need to memorize this position as it's pretty common on bass, like a power chord position on guitar.
