How to practice the modes - Lesson with Scott Devine

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, these are questions I get asked SO much... What are the modes? How can I practice them? Is it not just the same as a major scale?

... And I can totally relate! They used to confuse me so much when I was younger... then suddenly, like a light switch turning on I was like... Ahhhh, that's what they are - that's how to practice them!

So yes, all of the diatonic modes are built from the major scale - BUT each one has it's own sound and characteristics. To realize this and embed the sound within your musical memory you must treat them as there own entity.

I've put this video lesson together to show you what I'm talking about. Hopefully you'll have the 'light switch moment' I had.

Here's the lesson... Welcome to Scott Devine's Shed! | ScottsBassLessons.com

Thanks for checking it out!

Ez,

Scott.

Another awesome video Scott!

I've understood the different modes for a while now but was curious to see how you practiced them and that's a great method right there. And I had to laugh, I was going to ask you how your learned the fingerboard so well, but then I got to the end of the video... Needless to say, I subbed and watched the second video. An even better one in my opinion, just because I've always really been stuck in one position, but now you gave me lots of stuff to work on.

Thanks again Scott,

Matt

Man, thanks.
Really enjoyed the modes video.
Played for years, stopped for 12 and recently started again. Always played by ear and learned band songs to play with the general understanding of the major scale as a basis. This time around I want to learn more about theory to better understand musical language - on and off the bass!
So cheers to a good practical vidd lesson Scott.

I detest modes and everything about them. But this video is great!

Hey cheers guys! Great to hear you like the new tutorials!

Modes can be SO confusing if taught in the wrong way, hopefully this lesson takes away some of the confusion!

If you missed it in my first post here's another link to the lesson...

I really like this idea...I'm going to implement this into my practice routine and see how it works.
