Start by buying a bass in the middle ground (Carvin, Cort, Yamaha to name a few great value for money basses). Cheap basses will perform poorly and may deny you the playability factor as well as a decent sound. Try as many as you can and see what fits in your hand and lap, how it stays on, sitting and standing up. Have someone with you who is more knowlegable in the sound department to help you on the sound of the basses that click for you. From then on it's a matter of time to start your affair with the bass and evolve. Once you have the intrument, then it's a matter of finding a teacher. I am self-taught so I cannot help here. May please some other fellow TBer carry on from here?

You have the first part down, you wanna play bass. Now stop calling it a guitar! LOL

fullrangebass said good stuff. Get a bass, a reasonable one Opinions on that will vary depending on who you talk to, but there are some "can't go wrong" models out there - Fender, Music Man, Yamaha, G&L, and so on.

Hit the bricks (preferrably with someone who knows a thing or two about basses) and give 'em some play time. I have found that some instruments will "talk to me" while others give me "the cold shoulder" - they may be perfectly fine instruments, but if you don't "feel it" then keep looking. Even if you can't really play yet, holding an instrument to see how it feels can say a lot. Some may feel really great, while others feel awkward. Don't be afraid to ask questions and don't be afraid to make some noise.

A reasonable amp is also a must. All of the above applies and your budget is a factor. Post your budget and general, premilinary instruments and amp brand interests and folks here will steer you around better.

Finally, and I will turn over the floor after this, a good teacher is always a good thing.

tZer yields the floor.
