I Was Humbled Recently

I've been able to follow chord progressions and play root notes for a long time now. Basically since I started. But I've always wanted more than that, so I sought out songs that had interesting basslines and focused on learning them.

The other day I purchased a nice audio interface and decided I'd record some of my playing along side the studio recordings of the songs I was learning.

What I didn't realize is there were maybe 3 songs that I could play note for note. I was a little shocked when I realized it. I played along to a few songs and forgot parts, fumbled through sections I normally flew through, and just had trouble keeping up overall.

So now that I realize where I really am, I've put the bass down and really listened closely to some of these songs, trying to figure out every little detail, every accent the players made in the original recordings. Then playing along and focusing on perfection.

It's about time I become a real bass player.

I like to use software that slows down the song and changes the pitch of the song up an octave. this way i can clearly hear every nuance and note that is played. pick up on many little things that make the part sound like that part that you miss when you play thru it in real time.

Hmm, I'll have to try that.

Good realization man. I was similarly humbled the first time I tried to play with a metronome. So easy to be misled into thinking that you have good meter because you're matching up with your toe tapping or head bobbing.
