I just got my first bass...

Sign in to disble this ad
and I have no idea what I am doing. I had an guitar that I didn't use anymore (Agile AL-2000). I posted on CL and I got an offer for an Ibanez SR500 in return. Not sure if this was a good deal or not. Now I have to learn how to play bass. I am not one of the guitar player who think they can pickup a bass like it is a 4 string guitar.

If you guys have any good tutorial for me. Shoot it my way

You traded a $225 guitar for a $550 bass, so yeah that deal rocks.

I started off with Hal Leonard's Bass Method 1, it comes with a CD and DVD and will teach you to read music instead of starting on tabs. It starts with the very basics like how to hold everything, and is a decent place to jump in.

Congrats on your first bass. Check out a website called studybass.com and if you can afford it I'd recommend getting a bass instructor. Good luck and most of all have fun.

You totally owned that transaction.

Ibbys aren't my cup of coffee, but they are solid basses. My favorite learning site is MarloweDK's http://playbassnow.com/

Yes, www.studybass.com will help a lot.
  • Ask specific questions here.
  • Get your major scale box pattern into muscle memory.
  • Play from standard notation, fake chord or lead sheet music. Tabs are a dead end. OK to peek at a specific riff, but don't play from tab.
  • Roots are OK right at first.
  • Main thing is to get to know where the notes are on your fretboard. I use the box and then move the box where I need it. Here is a site that will help with the box.

Gotta have a fretboard chart. http://www.guitarhangout.com/wp-cont...itar-notes.jpg

Helps to have the big picture in mind. Check out this fake chord backing track (playing to backing tracks is a great training tool) . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4x0u...eature=related Couple of months from now be able to play roots to the chord changes on this backing track. Couple of months from then - be able to insert some of the other chord tones into your bass line. Am7 would be R-b3-5-b7. After roots shoot for R-5-R-5. More on that later.

Get your fingers moving where they should - scale runs and the box patterns right now will help with that.
http://www.cyberfretbass.com/scales/basic/page2.php
The red circle is the root note and the numbers are what fingers to use index = 1, middle = 2, ring = 3 and little finger = 4. Place the red circle (root) on the first note of the scale you want - then follow the pattern. Notice the pattern takes place over four frets and you have four fingers, yep, use the correct finger.

Ask specific questions someone will always help.

Good luck and have fun.

Great deal you got!

If you're truly interested in learning the bass, you'll need to practice at least 30 to 60 minutes a day, every day to make progress. It might be slow at first but it's too cool when you can play a live gig in front of friends and fans.

Check out the link in my sig. below for some great TB info to help you along your bass learning journey.

Good luck.
