I need help with slap bass...

I'm trying to teach myself how to slap but I can't just seem to do it.

1. How do you hit the sting with your thumb? Should I be using the bottom or the side of my thumb or something? Every time I try to hit not only do I sometimes miss (lol I'm uncoordinated) but I just make some buzzing noise, as if I had my finger on a fret and was playing that note. What can I do to improve?

2. When do I need to "pluck" the strings? Do I pluck the same string after I've hit it with the thumb, or pluck the octave, or what? Or is it all just left up to the musician?
