Hey guys,
so i have no meaningful background in music, can't read it, can't play it but i am taking steps to change that.

I Decided i wanted to learn about music theory and apply that to learning how to play the bass, so i rushed down to my local chapters/indigo bookstore to purchase a copy of "Bass for Dummies", fortunately it was in stock but i also walked out with "Music theory for Dummies". I highly recommend these books for people with no knowledge of music.

started out reading the theory book and i can't get over how enjoyable it is learning about theory. Don't get me wrong, it's not the easiest thing to learn, there is a lot of head scratching going on, but once i finally figure something out it feels amazing.

Spent a few days on circle of fifths, that was a puzzler but the lightbulb finally went on and it makes sense to me now, thought i would have to memorize the whole thing but "Father Charles" really does the job.

Spent the last little bit working on intervals and that finally worked itself out, using a pencil and some paper really helps with the learning process, just reading it wasn't enough. Sight reading is just going to take practice and time i think, and i will always work on that while studying other aspects of theory.

I have been using the Bass book as well, i received a J&D brothers bass(Canada's version of SX basses) in the post last friday, and really have only worked on finger exercises over the weekend, Bass still needs a setup, and i have no amp.

The last three days have been spent working both my jobs so the 5 hours a day i am home i spend 4 of them in bed and the other hour is spent wondering how much longer i can work two jobs. I do however have plans to bring my bass to work, second job is pretty much sitting in a first aid room waiting for people to injure themselves, to continue with finger exercises for right and left hand.

My last step is to sign up for lessons, i have plans set up at a local shop but the bass instructor is touring for the next month so i will have to wait for his return, in the meantime i will get to know my bass, and buy more gear of course.

That was much too long, anyway enjoying the site and find the search feature quite useful.

Welcome. Good luck, with your schedule carving out practice time will be a chore.

It's a matter of priorities. Hang in.
