Im having trouble with I Was Made To Love Her

Im using the Shadows of Motown book to learn this song. I really enjoy the song for the bass line alone, and while i'll never play it live, i'm learning to get my reading and speed up.

The question im asking is directed at anyone else who has the book....

I dont understand the linked open notes.
The note D is an open note, but its linked to C.
Ive just been playing those notes in a raking fashion with one finger. Is that correct?

Also, what is the best position on the neck to play this?
At the moment, i start the verse with my little finger on the F in the middle of the neck. (8th fret)

yes you are correct...james jamerson often played with one finger, and loved the use of open strings, (even when they don't seem to fit)
