Its called "2 Timers" from Victor Wooten's new album "Palmystery"

Are there any songs you've heard/played that are in multiple time signatures?

I was listeneing to Kashmir my Zep on the way to work and I thought thats an odd timing. On working it out it sounded like 3 bars of 4/4 on a loop of the riff, dont know if I'm correct but it just sounded weird. Makes you stop and listen. Not good when your on the highway in traffic...

Many of Olivier Messiaen's works have multiple time signatures simultaneously in parts of the orchestra - you might want to check out Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" where the time signature changes every bar towards the end!

Off the top of my head - we play both of these tunes in my band:

Can't Dance - Joshua Redman
The Crunge - Led Zeppelin (and Joshua Redman)

When you say it's in 3 and 4 at the same does, do you mean (For example) Victor is playing in 4, and someone else is playing in 3?

Or does it change every bar?

When I saw the Pat Metheny group live - the drummer played a solo where the cowbell part was in a different time signature to the rest of the kit - it created real tension!

Yup. A lot of minimalist music uses this kind of technique of layering parts in different meters to create some really cool sounds. I used to play in kind of a minimalist/metal band that layered parts like this, it can be cool when it's done right. If you loop all the parts properly then even some pretty bland stuff can sound really intricate.

I used to play with a guy that did this all the time...he would 'divide' the kit in half-
5 over 4
6/8 crossed with 4/4 (pretty common in Latin music)
11/16 against 4
...etc.

It could be maddening...thankfully, he usually kept the Ride in 4 (Quarter Notes).

Guys with 4-limb independence + 2 brains usually excel at this (Vinnie Coliauta, anyone?)

Another thing to check out/listen for-
Multiple "timelines"(?) in 4/4...although everyone may be referencing "4"-
Some may be counting in 1/2 time vs. "the time", others may be playing doubletime vs. "the time".
Try playing a nice, fat 1/2 time groove against one of your drummer's busy doubletimed grooves.

I think the Beatles had a couple of tunes that had bits in 3/4 and 4/4 at the same time

Black Dog.... Bonham was determined to play 4/4, while the song is in 5/4 (or so the story i heard goes.)

A song i would love the band i'm in to learn, i jokingly suggested it, and the drummer looked at me like i had just exploded or something. Would be an awesome to get tight.

"The Spin" by the Yellowjackets. Bass part is in 3/4, rest of band plays in 4.

As for "Schism" by Tool, I believe that song is all in 3/4. Listen to the phrasing.

Just to be a techy geek, I see 2 different ideas being tossed out: Polyrhythm and polymeter

Polyrhythm is the different beat subdivivions within the same measure like 3 against 2 (that Bach christmas bell song) the "3" beat quarter notes are shorter duration than the "2" beat quarternotes

Polymeter is when the beat subdivisions are identical but the 2 voices play measures of different lengths, which "phase" in and out of synch with each other. so a 3 vs 4 polymeter would synch up on the downbeat every 12th beat.

My College prof was a nut about this stuff.

If you want to find mind bending polyrhythms check out Cuban Rumba or Bata music ( like Ilu Anya or Groupo Afrocubano De Matanzas) or West African drumming.

and then you have your hemiola where two groups of three beats are replaced by three groups of two beats.

Feels like playing a long triplet over two beats. 3/2.

Tap one two with your foot and hand clap a triplet at the same time
