I'm not longer "loaning" DVD's to students, or anyone else for that matter

Ok, I'm just a little mad at myself. Several months ago I gave a free lesson to a guy from Church.... yes church. We finish up and I play the Barbary Coast lick, he really digs it so I pop on the Jaco modern electric bass dvd, after a few minutes I ask him if he wants to borrow it for the week. He cancels the next week and moves the following week. I call and his cell phone is changes his girlfriend tells me they've broken up and she doesn't have his number...

It wouldn't bother me except In the past 15 years had 9 vhs/dvd's stolen/ruined/loaned ect. I'm so tired of buying this thing...

I'm totally on the 'same page' with you about that. I also try to be nice to folks, but some 'friends' see that as a sign of weakness.. so I've learned to say "no!" just because certain things should not be loaned out PERIOD.. not the easiest thing to vocalize, but you'll be glad you did.. hehe, gets alot easier with practice too

Even if the people you loan DVDs/CDs/any other media return them in the same condition that you loaned them in, with all of the methods of copying them available, I'd be a little concerned about the "loanees" making copies of my stuff and stiffing the artist who created it.

Well if they were gonna go through the trouble of doing that, then they might as well download it.

But not really, because downloading illegally is wrong.

True - people look at me weird after I return something, when they say...

Did you copy it?

I say no - I've ordered my own copy.

They say - but you can just copy it.

I say - yes I know how to, but I prefer not to copy it, and to order the original.

.....I think they think I'm strange.

Only 9 in 15 years? I'm only 22 and the amount of DVDs/CDs/Books I've lent that either were never returned or I had to make an effort to get back is pretty huge.

I even had a guy BS me saying he didn't know what I was talking about A WEEK after a lent him a DVD. I had to shove him aside, go in his home take my DVD then leave.

That was the last time I lent anything to a man.

Sorry man. I bet that guy isn't even looking at the thing either! I don't loan anything to students. I tell them "I use this for other lessons" and tell them where to buy it.

+1

Same here, I'm collecting this stuff, have two copies of everything one that i'm using and one is for the collection.
I love to buy the originals along with the book or whatever it comes with.
Never loaning nothing to anyone, i just say that i'm a collector and if they want to get it i'll be happy to say where to buy it.

That's why when loaning out things, I generally feel more comfortable if it's an exchange.

No offense but 9 times and you never took a hint?

anyway I'm with you. I avoid lending out anything. If you really have to, make a copy.
