Improving playing

how would a 15-year-old who has been playing bass for almost 6 months improve his bass playing? In general and for metal.
I know this question is very general, but I need something. People say Practice makes Perfect, but one needs to know HOW to practice in order to get anywhere. Tips and such would be much appreciated.

thanks! I probably wasn't specific enough, but thanks for any help someone can give me.

oh, and I'm not looking for the "fast track" to bass stardom; I know that getting talented at any instrument takes time, dedication and a lot of work.

Get a learn to play bass book.

You dont need to learn how to play metal.

get tattoos, grow your hair long, become a drug addict, worship satan ... then practice minor and pentatonic scales in all keys and dropped d tuning if all you have is a 4 string. learn to play along with your favorite bands recordings to develop your ear. Get a drum machine and play along at fast tempos with aggresive metal style beats.

If you prefer to be a well rounded musician who can play anything, study with a qualified music teacher who will teach music, not licks and tablature.

The better bass players are musically educated. i.e. Dave LaRue, Stu Hamm, John Myung, etc.
