I am interested in swing, bebop, fusion, hard bop and symmetrical improvisation. What is the most comprehensive method starting from the fundamentals. Contacted Aebersold and recommended the " Improvisor's Bass Method" by Chuck Sher since I want do start playing upright as well. A recommendation or list of books will be highly appreciated.

+1 on the Chuck Sher book, it will cure most problems. Anything in the Jamie Aebersole library that looks interesting will be a help.

Everytime you hear or read about an interesting bass player, get their recordings and hear what they are up to.
