Hi All,
I really wanna make a good effort to learn to play slap bass. I am sort of still a newbie and I dont hang out with other players. I dont know of any teachers either so its a DIY job I am afraid.
What I am looking for is a decent clear beginner guide to slap bass . . i am not lookihng to become the next Mr.Clayppool or anything I just wanna add something (different) to my playing . .

This is one of the better instructional videos out there and should get you on the right track.

It comes with an audio CD and the 25th anniversary edition has added tablature. This is an invaluable resource for any player regardless of his/her skill level. |

Thank you Murf, that's a tough book. Not too many people crack that one open.
I think Alexis' slap program is very good too, it came out at a time when there was precious little video material available (especially GOOD material). However, if you ask me, I'll tell you which one you should buy.....  |

The disk is in very discrete modules, so it's easy to go in, learn something, then feel like you can work on that until you're ready for the next step. Very impressive and digestable, like all that guy's work. |

I never worked with the Alexis' book much, because my VCR/TV was nowhere close to practice room or amp. Ed's is a DVD, so I can sit at my 'puter, next to my full rig, practice, and read TB. Not much better than that!

| | | | I have all three recommended here, Alex, Ed, and Tony. I think Ed is the best one for the beginner. I'd start from Ed's DVD, then Alex, then move on to Tony's book. Tony's SlapIt! is the best book out there, but it requires some learning curve. |

We have MODERATORS here that CONSTANTLY spam the gear of their choice, and someone had the nuts to ban Ed Friedland. Gimme a break. You guys DO know that Ed is one of preeminent Bass Educators on the planet, and has answered TONS of questions from seasoned players and newbies alike, all free of charge, right? TB is LUCKY to have a player of Ed's stature posting here.

The principle of it being that some places pay to advertise on the banner locations on TB, and when a commercial user like Ed posts about his own book/DVD, it's basically free publicity. This isn't fair, hence, commerical users aren't allowed to post freely about their own products. It'd be the same thing if Ken Smith popped out of the DB side to post his basses in the "For Sale" section of the BG forums.
Cheeze, the difference between Ed and the moderators who "constantly spam the gear of their choice" is that Ed makes money when people buy what he's "spamming" with. When embellisher plugs his (admittedly swank) Benaventes, he's not going to make any money when someone buys one.
Ed's done a lot for the bass community. From his other posts here, he's a pretty class guy, too. However, there are rules for a reason. Editing the post to remove the free advertisement? I'd say that's Chris doing his job as he's supposed to. Banning, a bit far.
EDIT: Oh, and guys, he's unbanned. Must've happened pretty damn quick, too.
