interesting & exotic scales, arpeggios online in tab or chart format?..

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm using the same tired scales and pentatonic licks it seems over & over..
I'd like some new scales to extend my
musical vocabulary somewhat.
I'm a lousy reader, I'd prefer some charts / tab rather than music
"on the staff"..
Id like to stop playing the same stuff,
I'm all cliche's when I play jazz or walking stuff.. my reading is very slow..
it seems like I've got a wall to break through, my knowledge of scales isn't expanding

Scales ain't gonna help. Learn the neck and intervals so you can easily play what you hear in your head. THEN learning scales will help, but you won't need charts. Instead of getting a picture that tells you where to put your fingers, get some basic theory instruction so if you're told that harmonic minor is 1, 2, b3, 5 b6, 7 of the major scale, you'll be able to figure it out.

With both pieces of that knowledge, you'll be able to figure out for yourself how to play the harmonic minor, and you'll be HEARING it. Then if that scale suggests some new music to you, you'll be able to find that music on the bass.

If you only want to play bass without LEARNING HOW TO PLAY, then I can't help you a'tall....

John

Yes to the interval number. Use it as a generic map that you can take anywhere.
Major scale...........1,. 2,.. 3,.. 4,. 5,. 6,.. 7
Ionian..................1,. 2,.. 3,.. 4,. 5,. 6,.. 7
Lydian..................1,, 2,, 3, #4,, 5.,, 6,...7
Mixolydian.............1,. 2,. 3,.. 4,. 5,.. 6, b7
Natural Minor scale 1,. 2, b3,.. 4,. 5, b6, b7
Aeolian ............... 1,. 2, b3,.. 4,. 5, b6, b7
Dorian ................ 1,. 2, b3,.. 4,. 5,.. 6, b7
Phrygian.............. 1, b2, b3,. 4,. 5,. b6, b7
Hyngarian Gypsy... 1,. 2,. b3, #4, 5,. b6, ..7

Hungarian Gypsy intervals: 1, 2, b3, #4, 5, b6, 7 Grab your natural minor scale and sharp the 4 and the 7. No need to learn a bunch of patterns just adjust the interval.

Look up some exotic scales on:
http://www.looknohands.com/chordhous.../index_rb.html
Egyptian scale intervals: 1,2,4,5,b7 So just grab your major scale - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and omit the 3 and 6 and flat the 7th. Or better still grab the major scale and move your fingers around see how it sounds. if you like it name it the guadrogong scale.

Use you major or natural minor scale as home bass - and then adjust the intervals for the specific scale you want

Think of it this way and I think it will open a new door for you.

Have fun.

those are great.. the sort of moody, dark scales I tend to like.
the modes are also helpful,
I've ignored alot of theory, and it all interests me,
bring it..
I need homework.
love this stuff

thanks,John, I know,..I guess I'm a 'quick-fix" kinda guy,
and the brick wall that's appeared in front of me is exactly this..my lack of theory.

I can recognize chords, scales from studying guitar,
maj,min,
min7,maj7, min9
dim,aug,
6th,11th and 13th chords..

I know what they sound like, and how to play the chords & scales.
this enables me to function in most bands, compose, figure out most pop/rock stuff..
but only to a point.

when certain harmonies or chords become more complex, dissonant,
the brick wall appears,
I'd like to know the theory behind the music,
I tend to play by ear alot,or just stealing riffs..

it's time i dove into this..It facinates me,
I need a basic text or a few theory lessons, I'd like to learn it all..it does interest me.

Which is such a good scale name I refuse to call it diminished whole tone or altered dominant.

If you're just interested in scales, get the Bass Grimmore book from music store. Literally every scale you'll ever see is in there.

Musically, though, it's rather useless.

thanx..
if ya give me the intervals (1 flat2 3 4 #5 etc)

or give me the scale in G,
and write the letters(G,A,C,D,etc)
I appreciate anything ya got..

I'm starting to notice these exotic or ethnic scales are mostly repeats of the modes, with a modification to one note,

or if I take a major or minor scale & experiment with augmenting or diminishing a note a half step, it becomes something cool..
( although I can't identify the new scale, what's it's called.. my lack of theory)
the scales are a good starting point,

I also need exersises and some cool arpeggios, things to warm up with, increase speed etc. 1 or 2 good ones keep me busy for a while..
