It has nearly every song from the Real Book written as charts (no melodies). You're saying "so what" (and not the Miles Davis song), I have the Real Book. Well, this app plays the piano/bass/drums for every song with the ability to change keys, adjust volume of each instrument, tempo, style of rhythm and write your own charts. I have been using this for a few months now practicing walking bass lines and soloing and it really helps a lot. It's like having the Abersol recordings for every song. Plus it fits in your pocket. http://irealbook.net/ |

You can also put in your own changes and write your own song so you can in effect practice just about any song. Very cool. |

Another huge bonus is the forums within the app itself - holiday songs, Klezmer, Beatles, pop hits...all right at your fingertips. The only caveats I've found... Starting with the obvious - someone has to know the melody. If you're working with a singer, this can be nice and easy, but if none of the instrumentalists know the head, you can be in trouble. Similarly...be ready to substitute some of the changes, particularly on forums/user-added tunes. Sometimes they're spot-on, sometimes not. The only other issue I've encountered has nothing to do with the app, but with my iPhone...make sure your 'Auto Lock' is set to a duration that will allow you to get through a song. I was feeling pretty proud of myself the first time I used the app on a gig....until my screen went blank one minute into the tune. Doh! |

| | | | Yummy! This app looks very promising. At first, I was taken aback by the price but after more thought, it's a great value at $9.99.

EDIT: the answer is on the irealb forum

| | | | this app rules... but its definetly not as nearly as good as aebersold play alongs..
because on the app all songs are played by randomly generated computers.. like the walking bass and stuff.. .while the aebersold ones are by real world class players... nonetheless i'd say its just as good cause of the portability and what it can do

"Number System" which is based on the Nashville numbering system.
In the transpose feature, you can select a key or you can select
the "Number System." When using the Number notation, every
chart will be seen in 'numbers' view. Instead of the Nashville
Roman numerals (I, ii, V, etc.), you will see common Arabic
numerals (1, 2, 5, etc.). |

Nashville number system uses Arabic numerals, not Roman... |

That's the system I use for my own notes/charts. |

Used by classical music students for analysis in Theory class. I use this system for jazz charts, too.
