Jaco Modal Etude Book

Hey all,

I remember when I read "Jaco: The Extraordinary and Tragic Life of Jaco Pastorius" about a year ago, the book mentioned a book that Joe Diorio introduced Jaco to during their time playing together around 1971-72ish. It was really influential in introducing modal playing to both of them, and I think it was also what Coltrane used to get ready for the "Kind of Blue" sessions. Does anybody who owns the Jaco book or who knows the etude book remember what it is called? I got the biography from the library when I read it so it has long been returned.

I believe the book you're thinking of is "Thesaurus Of Scales And Melodic Patterns" by Nicolas Slonimsky. Here is is at Amazon.

I play through this book once a week or so just to practice my reading and keep my chop up.

No, not really.

I know some jazz guys who have used it. From what I could tell it is just a bunch of crazy patterns. I guess it would be good for generating ideas?
