Some time I have to yell at my drummer "Keep it straight!" Drummers, especially modern influenced ones, don't seem to think that keeping time is inportant, and that they need to solo the whole song. Talk to him and see if you can't drill the KISS rule (keep it simple, stupid) rule into his head. You're not doing anything wrong by playing straight.
