Jazz blues tune

So I have an audition coming up and apparently I need to add a blues form song to my audition. You think that would be easy, but I can't make up my mind.

I was thinking All Blues by Miles Davis, but play an walking bassline under the solo, but I dont know if I should mess with a classic.

I was also thinking Straight No Chaser, but I don't know if I could live up to Monk iat this point of my career.

Does anyone have any good ideas?

Good ideas. You might consider "Birks' Works" a tune by Dizzy Gillespie, a nice slowish minor blues. Or you could consider showing some historical awareness and do "St. James Infirmary". Either one would be easier than the tunes you listed.

If you are auditioning for a school or group of people who are older and experienced at auditioning musicians you should keep in mind that while you will need to show technique its not the most important issue in an audition. Many, many players have great technique, but the really fine musicians will show taste, intelligence, experience, musicianship and knowledge.

I'm sure you'll get many other great ideas from this thread, consider all of them.

Walking a bass line over a 6/8 tune with a bass line as strong as All Blues has been a mine field for me.

Consider a 12 bar blues in 4/4. Monk's Misterioso is a very simple blues you could do solo if you like. Choose a key that uses the part of the fretboard you like & vamp through it.

Blue Monk is a pretty straightforward tune that might be good for you to do.

I just put roots and fifths on the big beats and walk over all the little beats almost like its 6/4. I found it works pretty well in my jazz combo as long as I land on a root on beat 1. I tried landing on a fifth once and it screwed everyone up and we fell apart ha.

I actually originally was thinking that but I honestly think its kind of a lame song.

Why do you sound like you're not worthy to play these tunes? I don't understand that.

You can do anything you want with those tunes. You're a musician.

Play those tunes and enjoy.

I don't know, All Blues is a cherished classic and expecatations of your listeners will be raised accordingly. I'd go with something a little less potential to implode.

Well, you have to like the tune. How about C Jam Blues played in Cmin?
