Jazz Camp Audition

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I've got this one week jazz camp run by a University I'm going to next week. The first day they have auditions so they know what group you'll have to be in. I'm just wondering what they'll ask me to play for the audition.

And sorry I don't know what forum this should go under. Mods, please move it if i'm wrong on the forum. Thank you!

I could imagine improvising over standards. Walking and and soloing. Perhaps?
Maybe some scales, modes, inversions, blues?
maybe a prepared piece as well?

They will likely put you in a group with other students and have you play a standard (a blues perhaps). Are you sure they didn't give you a song or two to prepare?

Pick something that shows them youre a competent player but doesnt make you look like youre showing off. People at camps always hate that suck up kid who tries to play stuff hes not ready for yet. More than likely they wont care about your scales and stuff for a live audition like that but you should know them all anyways. If you get a chance to call a tune Id suggest solar. You should be ready to walk and solo on this and its a kind of tricky tune to keep track of. You wouldnt look like your showing off but if you can keep the form and hold it down on that tune teachers would probably be impressed. Good luck whatever happens

P.S. you might want to learn a melody or two along with the changes incase they ask. You should also try to go into the camp with a few songs memorized.
