"Jazz Theory Book"? To buy or not to buy?

Girlfriend wants to know what I want for xmas. First, I said whole new setup. She proceeded to flipp me off...my chick's a real crowd pleaser.

No really, I suggested the Jazz Theory Book, but I wanted to get some opinions. I can read okay, actually I'm getting better, and I dig the theory stuff, my question is, does this book really only apply to Jazz? Not to say I don't dig jazz, but I'm not there theory wise...hell, maybe this book will help me get there theory wise. What do you know???

Anyway, opinions? I've seen it mentioned on here previously, but couldn't find anything inthe archives.

This is probably the single best theory book on jazz today. Do a search, it's been discussed (at length) many times. "Mark Levine" might yield more specific results if you search with that instead.

It does not apply only to jazz. The theory of jazz kind of encompasses the theory of everything musical, with particular emphasis on improvisation. Improvisation, taken out of real-time, is the same process as bass-line writing. Improvisation in real-time will come in handy too, even if you don't choose to call it jazz.

Excellent book. Very well written - super easy to read and understand. One of the best books on theory in general.

Excellent book. Be sure to actually play the examples or have a pianist do it for you. Hearing them makes all the difference in your understanding.
