I'm going through this bass instructional book. He Talks about 21 aspects of his bass playing. One aspect is pick ups among other aspects such as Lead ins, turnarounds ,the groove, fills, ect. ect.

Can anyone tell me what pick-ups and Lead ins are?

Here's a link to an article that defines lead-ins. I'm not sure about pick-ups, besides the ones in my bass.

BTW, how's the book? I've thought about picking it up myself.

I want to review it but I just got into it. I can tell you what is in it though.

It has a cd in it with some songs that are similar to some of his famous songs that he played on. It has a little biography with pictures too. In fact I wrote to him asking for advice on how to best learn from the book.

He talks about the people he played with. King Curtis, BB King, Aretha, Bernard Purdy and many others. He talks about his style too. Its hard to understand everything because he is not in front of me to ask questions.

Each song on the CD has him explaining things. Nothing would be as good as actually sitting with him and learning, asking questions about what he is talking about.

I can give it a fair review after I digest most of the information in the book.

Right now I can not take what he is teaching and create my own lines in his style.

He is very spiritual so he give his reason and examples to that.
