Sunshine of your Love is also a classic.

| | | | As far as blues go just learn the standard lines. There is a basic form you learn then you just improvise what goes where. It will really help you in all genres and I find it's the easiest ways to start improvising your lines.

Pick any song that has bass and go to it! (Some of the great Zep songs feature all acoustic guitars or JPJ on organ/melotron...
Specific songs I would recommend include:
1. The Lemon Song
2. Ramble On
3. Livin' Lovin' Maid
4. Heartbreaker
5. The Ocean
Screw it! Just learn every Zep song you can...

Sorry, ottispunkmeyer - The Lemon Song is not for beginners. But listen to it anyway and aim for it after you get through your batch of beginner stuff!

The intro part is pretty easy, and helped me learn some sliding though, plus its just fun and very recognizable. How Many More Times is a much better starter song Id think though. |

If you go back, most popular music evolved from the blues, which is why it's a great starting place.

You will learn a classic and you will learn the chord progression of a 12 bar blues.

| | | | "Pride and Joy" - Stevie Ray Vaughn - Another 12 bar blues song that you can play as simply as using a 1-3-5-3 line or do the whole 1-3-5-6-8-6-5-3, walk up and down, all even 1/4 notes.

Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash
When The Levee Breaks - Led Zep.
Dark Hollow - Grateful Dead
Badfish - Sublime
I Want To Be Sedated - Ramones
Voodoo Chile' - Jimi Hendrix
Monkey Man - Toots and the Maytals/The Specials
This list covers a lot of styles. Reggae, Funk, Rock, Punk, Blues, and Ska. That way you can focus on other aspects of bass like timing, rhythm, not just note progression. |
