Does anybody here have this book? I just got it from e-bay.Fortunately it was less than 10.- incl. postage but I still should have gotten myself a sixpack of Sierra Nevada instead.
I've bought a lot of books over the years, some better than others , but this is the only music book that I've ever tossed in the garbage.

Hmmm.

There are some great lines in that book. I'd give it another chance.

OK, I'll give it another look maybe I judged it too quickly.
I have some of the Jimmy Haslip Books and also the Marc Johnson Book.I really like those.

Yikes!

$10 for just the book? That's steep... Hopefully, it came with the CD? The book by itself is $3.50 on Carol's site...

I have it, and think it's good for sight reading, reference... but not much else.

I was expecting more.

I also have her Jazz Improv for Bass book as well... It too has lots of good sight reading material in it (more so than the Pro's Jazz Phrases Book) as well as a bit more "writing" in it as well. The two are supposed to be used together... Although, I haven't really sat down to tackle either much at this point.

I did get a CD with it but it is very weak.20 examples where Carol plays a few lines in different keys.No feel, bad tone, only the easiest licks in the book.It sounds so bad that I'm wondering of she got worse or if everybody else got so good that she's just a relic of the past.Like a Model T among Ferraris. There are some good reading exercises in the book, but nothing really exiting.

I practiced phrases from her book for a long time. They were really helpful in getting me started on doing jazz solos.

However, you have to know how to use the phrases. The book itself does not give much, if any, info on the "how" of things. That information would be in her jazz improv book or on the soloing DVD. Maybe that's why this little book does not seem worthwhile to you. I would give it another try.

Take a tune, for example, that has a lot of ii V i's in it (i.e. something like Autumn Leaves) and in one of the keys of the phrases in the book, and try playing the patterns with the changes as a practice solo. With practice, it does work.
