Latin basslines help

Sign in to disble this ad
I play at a Spanish church that plays everything but the one type of music I have trouble with is playing latin type of bass lines. I wish I had a example for you guys but the songs that I am thinking of are not on youtube in the style I am trying to play.

Well the question is, what are some well known patterns I can try to use to give me that feel?

You might want to check out this DVD:

Poncho Sanchez Fundamentals of Latin Music for the Rhythm Section (published by Cherry Lane Music, and distributed by Hal Leonard).

Styles covered include mambo, chachacha', merengue', and Afro-Cuban.

One of the things that makes this DVD good is that it highlights the rhythmic responsibilities of the entire Latin rhythm section.

The bassist featured on this CD Rene Camacho - great player!

Omg, the salsa link is exactly what I was talking about. Note wise I want to say its Root-5th-aug 5th(?)-Root-5th above root(?). The timing I can figure out but the pattern I would like to know.By the way thank guys for the speedy reply.

Actually, it's easier. More like:

/ root - 5th - octave / nothing - 5th - root /

You can also "jump the gun" and lead into a new chord by playing the 5th of the new chord, landing you on the new root.

Hope that helps! Here's some more tasty stuff:

Good stuff, but what you mean with / root - 5th - octave / -->nothing<-- - 5th - root / Would the nothing be a rest?

Yeah, if a bar of 4 is roughly 3 triplets, the 5th and root would fall roughly on the 2nd and 3rd triplets. Sometimes you can eliminate the 1st triplet of each bar like:

/ nothing - 5th - octave / nothing - 5th - root /

It still feels counterintuitive sometimes to not play on the 1.
