| | | | LEARNED TO PLAY MY FIRST SONG ALL THE WAY THROUGH!

just had to share after more than 2 yrs of frustration with guitar and not being able to play through a favorite song! at this point i'm self taught, bought my peavey grind 2 saturdays ago and this morning i learned how to play the bass line (albeit 90% tempo but started at 50%) and within 45 minutes was almost up to speed with no errors..one thing i would guess everyone shares here is that feeling of accomplishment playing through the first "real" song. in my case, it's george benson's breezin'. simple to play but decent tempo for a beginner like me and one of my favorite songs! i started with note for note but now i have some fill note ideas running through my brain..finally, i'm having fun!

congrats, hope you keep advancing! |

| | | | thank you much..and damn, does it...i've spent a lot of money on lessons, guitars and amps before deciding that guitar was not for me..hard to say "i give up" but i'm glad i didn't give up period and went for the instrument my gut said i really wanted to play in the first place but for various reasons did not. after playing through with gb, i also realized that the bass line is truly what i hear more than anything in a song and love..and even if i miss a note or beat, i'm able to come back to the beat immediately so i think i must have a pretty good sense of timing which seems to be critical as a bass player.

I had taken, and stopped taking, guitar lessons a few times over a period of six years or so, before my last guitar teacher turned me to bass. I remember the first time "jamming" on bass with my friends - even playing root notes was more fun than I ever felt! Keep on grooving and have fun |

| | | | thanks david, jet...and it's thanks to this site, not my former guitar teacher, superb player that he is, that i have learned some of the important building blocks for technique and hand, arm exercise that caused me a lot of my frustration in trying to learn guitar. i couldn't try to play the guitar for 10 minutes without pain my wrist, thumb and forearm..i'm now passing what i've read here to my 2 songs (14 and 10). my experience with my teacher and the kids has been "do some scales and drills just before you come in for a lesson"..never has exercise been brought up. i suspect, unfortunately, ours is not an isolated experience.
