Learning the 6 strings BG fretboard!!!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Guys,
I really tried to learn the fretboard of My 6 strings BG but it's very Hard for me.
I can say what note I'm playing but it just takes far too much time of calculating (unless it's around the Low area of the B and E).
My playing on the 6 strings got better and I'm really happy with the way I improved since I got it (10 months ago) but I'm sure knowing the fretboard would make a much better player.

I need Ideas for an easy way to legislate the fretboard in my memory!!!
I saw this fretboard warrior for 6 strings BG but did anybody used it ?? does it really a good way/software to invest 15$ in it?
Any other methods will be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Adi.

I wouldn't buy it. I have the free guitar version, and it's pretty useful, but for a 6 string BG it's too different.

Just do this:

Think or say a note. Now, find that note everywhere on the fretboard.

Then do the same with a different note (it's better if you just do it randomly, instead of going in a pattern)

The best method I have found is a bit down the page on this link;

"Patitucci also recommends setting your metronome to about 52 bpm and playing all the E 's on the bass, and then all the F 's, etc., as shown in Ex. 2. (This exercise was introduced by Joe Hubbard in July/Aug '93.) If you have a 5- or 6-string bass-or a 24-fret neck-be sure to extend the range of this exercise. You can go up chromatically or use the Circle of Fifths until you've played every note on the instrument."

Read some music that encompasses the entire range of the instrument. Gig as much as possible with the six. Reading gigs, chord chart gigs, gigs, there's nothing like on the job in real time training.

I find a lot of my notes relative to other notes.

If I can find ONE "C", then I can find "C's" around it quickly. I can find the "C's" around those "C's" just as quickly.

If I know where a "C" is, then I'm going to be able to see where notes are in relation to the "C". For example, C Maj.7 (C, E, G, B). I'll be able to find the E, G, and B in relation to the C. When I find those notes, I will be able to find the notes around it just like I was able to find all those "C's".

Does this make sense? I guess I'm relying on my ability to see patterns and make connections with my theory knowledge. In doing so, it doesn't matter if you have 4 strings or 40 strings.

Phil Smith thanks for the answer I know that while playing on gigs you can learn alot but unfortunately i don't play any gigs nowadays. I do have a lot of jam sessions so I'll try to shift more on the fretboard on them jam sessions.

Thanks to all of you guys.
I'll try all of them methods you gave me.
