| Personally, along with any instructional books you should probably go ahead and p/up a Real Book and start learning tunes. Just practice playing through changes with the metronome. Another great technique is to transcribe out parts you like and they don't have to be bass parts. And last but not least, listen, listen and listen some more. Absorb everything you can.
When I began playing jazz I just borrowed a college level general theory book from a friend and learned it along with working out of the Real Book. Not the most exciting way to do it, but worked alright for me.
