learning materials

Hi everybody,
I have had my bass for about 3 months, and I am starting to realize how involved the process of learning is.
I don't have time for a teacher and lessons at the moment ( full time job, volunteer football coach). So I am wondering if anyone can suggest some books and or dvds that would be good as a substitute for lessons. I have a rudimentary knowledge of theory from piano lessons a while back, but I am at a loss as to what to learn, technique-wise and general instruction-wise. I have Ed Friedland's walking book because I am a huge fan of jazz but I also want to get into Tool type bass playing and even stuff like the James Gang ( I guess that would be funk). Can anyone point me in the direction of some books?

Help is greatly appreciated.

Get Bass Guitar for Dummies by Patrick Pfeiffer. Ignore the title. It's one of the best bass instructional books I've come across in 25 years.

I'll also recommend the series of books written by Dave Overthrow. But I'm a bit partial to them as he was my bass instructor years ago (and soon to be again).
