Sign in to disble this ad
I have been trying to learn the modes, and I was wondering if I had this right.

Ionian(Pure Major Scale)
1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8

Dorian
1-2-b3 -4-5-6-b7 -8

Phrygian
1-b2 -3-4-5-b6-7-8

Lydian
1-2-3-#4 -5-6- -8

Mixolydian
1-2-3 -4-5-6 -b7-8

Aeolian (Pure Minor)
1-b2-3-4-5-b6-b7-8

Locrian
1-b2-b3-4-b5-b6-b7-8

Thanks
Grant

I probably would have used roman numerials, but I'm just nit-picking.

Ionian
I - II - III - IV - V - VI - VII - VIII

etc, etc

Aeolian has a b3, not a b2.

Edit: beat me to it, as well as the Phyrigian

Are you joking?

The modes have Grecian names, and the interval values are represented in Roman numerals...so they don't "come" in English

Ok, I have no idea what you guys are talking about. Besides the fact that Grant22 started a thread about modes. What are modes what are they used for?
That plain english.
(Some of us didn't have lessons or music theory)

I thought you might be making a pun about explaining them in "plain English" as they are naturally Greek.
Here's a pretty easy-to-understand description that I found:
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-the...s-of-music.htm
They're basically scales based off of each degree of the major scale and each has its own distinctive sound and flavor.

Thanks to the internet, you can do a lot of you music theory training on your own these days (I have- I had no lessons on theory either).
