Yes. As far as general theory is concerned they are the same. The main difference between a precision and a jazz bass is in the tone. Also, the jazz bass has a thinner neck.

They're just different models of the same instrument. It's like comparing two manual cars from different companies - they'll handle differently but you do the same things to make them work.

Dont listen to them! You have to learn everything upside down on a P bass compared to a J bass! And they only come in lefty!

They are absolutely the same, except one is infinitely superior to the other. You will be forced to choose and once you do, you will never be allowed to go back to the way things were before.

The fact that this question is being asked in the first place, even by a beginner, frightens me.

I have a question: That big yellow thing in the sky, is it the same thing as the big white thing that comes out at night?

The P bass is like being killed with the flat of a shovel
The Jazz is like being sliced by a ninja sword.

It's best to start with the j-bass. When you've mastered it, you can move on to the k-bass, the l-bass, the m-bass, etc.

J bass is for girls and P bass is for manly men. Choose wisely.

Let him discover that by himself! Maybe he could be the chosen one that brings P-Bass and J-Bass lovers together in peace and harmony but you probably just killed that. Way to go Phalex.
