I recently decided to pick up the bass and I was looking for suggestions on theory/scale books and good songs to start with. I've got a little head start on theory because I was in band and choir for 8 years so I don't have to start at the complete beginning except for limited bass cleft experience. Also, I like more of a deep growly tone than a bright jazzy one so any suggestions on pickups or strings to help acheive that sound? Sound reference links and all knowledge shared appreciated!

It might be a good idea to run through a site like studybass.com to do a gap analysis and identify areas you should spend time on. Studybass also have excercises & suggested songs to listen to. Once you know what needs your attention, spend time & money on that.
