Learning/Transcribing Reggae/Dub Rock

Hey guys-

I have an audition coming up for a gig I'd really like to be a part of, and the band does dub rock in the same vein as sublime/pepper etc. I'm going to start dissecting their songs and working up parts to them. I noticed that they use a lot of staccato chords on the upbeat, using mostly the upper few notes of the chord. People familiar with ska or dub will be familiar with this.

My question is this- Is there an easy way to decipher the chord by ear using those upper few notes? Generally I first match the notes on the bass to determine the chord and go from there, but that's increasingly difficult when its staccato and in a register higher than that of a bass.

Any suggestions?
