Learning on two instruments?

Sign in to disble this ad
Would there be any advantage/disadvantage to learning on more than one bass?

I'm a middle-aged beginner. I know that a different instrument won't improve my playing, and that I can't buy a substitute for practice. But I do see some neat instruments on the used rack....

So is it better to stick with a single instrument? Or is there value to learning the same material on a couple of different instruments and learning to adapt to variations in neck shape, string feel, etc.? My thought was that it might slow my progress in the short term, but ultimately make me a better player.

Thanks!

Alright, I confess, it was that nice semi-hollow-body I saw the other day that drove me to ask...

I think that it's best to do whatever makes playing fun. I've been playing for 40 years (on and off, non-professionally for the last 30) and whatever keeps you interested, motivated and practicing is a good thing.

I think you will find one will be your favorite and you will spend the most time with that one. Yes the necks are probable different and have a different feel, BUT, if you want that other one and your budget can stand it - go for it.

You are doing this as a hobby, for fun, right -- yep go for it.
