LESSSON: Bass soloing and phrasing issues

Sign in to disble this ad
So the bass solo thread inspired me to start a lesson series on playing solos, which is an oft-neglected skill. This first one is a basic introduction to what makes good phrasing and basic techniques of call/response that can be used.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEs3yJQXM8s

Let me know if this was useful. I can expand on this a lot more in upcoming videos in the series.

EDIT: A second video in the series -

Hey Mods, can we sticky HaVIC5's lessons?

Great lesson. I like the fact that you speak the blasphemy of "the notes and modes don't matter so much".

I think it should
Be said that we
Don't speak in four
word phrases phrases phrases

Can you make your
Next Lesson on how
to phrase over the
bar line line line?

You explanation of antecedent and consequent phrases is great. Your use of other melodic tools such as sequencing helps make your phrasing more coherent. Post some more.

Ah! I can't wait to get out of work and watch this. HaV1C5's lesson of stacking 4ths was amazing, I'm sure this will be great too.

Great video, I like how you really focused on the rhythmic element of a solo and realized that the notes weren't as important.
