LIttle finger locks up

I have a problem where my little finger on my fretting hand locks up at the first knuckle and makes it difficult to play. Do you have any suggestions on what to do about this problem? I have just started to play and never really paid the problem much attention since I am right handed but now it is raising its ugly head and I am at a loss on what to do. Thanks much for any help.

Hmmm... sounds like it could be trigger finger. By locking, do you mean your little finger literally snaps shut as though you were clinching your fist - or is it something different?

I have arthritis in all 4 knuckles but the little finger will lock in a straight position and be difficult to bend quickly. It will click when I am able to finally bend it. So I have a problem playing with the little finger on the left hand.

or do you mean locked as in stuck? might be a blood flow issue? I did an outside gig once - it was cold and I was wearing a short sleeve shirt and tight wrist bands and my left hand got stuck in a certain position. scary! I have odd blood flow issues in my hands, always ge3tting pins and needles. . .

This complicates the problem you have and there will be no answer here i am afraid. It maybe you are not in a postion to play bass and in trying to do so aggrivate the arthritis, therefore worsen the condition. You need medical advice on this and explain what it is you want to do with your hands (play bass). The condition need to be treated first, it is priority in your life, do not give it a chance to deteriate. Good luck and hope you find an answer.
