Looking for advice on instructional DVDs

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, I'm a rather new bassist (been playing steadily for a couple of months, before which I had experimented now and then). I'm looking at learning more about playing slap/funk bass. I've come across a couple of DVDs online, and I think I may pick one up. I'm basically looking for something that will provide a good introduction to playing that style. I've been looking mainly at:
Alex Sklarevski: The Slap Bass Program
and
Slap Bass: The Ultimate Guide, featuring Ed Friedland

Of course if you know of others that are good, please let me know.

Thanks very much,
Fwarg

EDIT: Probably should've checked out the books thread before posting this. Sorry guys.

IMHO, that is one of the best instructional videos on the market, both in terms of content and production. It's pre-Wooten, so it doesn't cover double thumping, but it does provide a comprehensive overview of "conventional" slapping. There's plenty of material to keep you busy for a while.

If you're new to bass you might want to also just go on youtube and places like that and simply watch people play slap bass, as a supplement for proper instruction. Really try to get into the head of the person playing and imagine how it would feel. Learning music is just as much about getting inside what's really going on with your mind as much as it is about learning technique. Then you'll be learning not only physically but also mentally.
