Looking for JPJ article

Sign in to disble this ad
Some time ago a poster was discussing the time signature and the complexity of the riff in Black Dog. Another poster then linked to an article by John Paul Jones in which he discussed, at length, how he wrote the riff.

Can anyone help me find this? I have tried a few different searches but there are too many things that come up. Any help would be appreciated.

The article you're looking for was in the first issue of Bass Guitar Magazine. It was the Summer 2003 issue. Musicdispatch.com has back issues for $4.95 plus shipping. I've ordered from them numerous times and I'm pleased with the service.

JPJ said that the Black Dog riff was inspired by a Muddy Waters blues riff, although he didn't give a song title.

Hmm, I'd always heard he just came up w/ it off the cuff at a recording session, the rest of the guys took it from there. One of their on the spot deals.

The Crunge was another spur of the moment things as well apparently.
Black Dog is indeed a curious riff.
