Looking for a method

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everybody,
I started playing bass guitar (4string) a couple of months ago. I am already a musician (bassoonist). But the bass guitar is still a new instrument for me. I found myself playing lots of pieces on the bass already. As a being professional musician (bassoonist) I know the principles of learning (starting) a new instrument. Therefore I started to do research to find a nice bass guitar method (very good one) on the internet this evening. Since I came across lots of options, selections of bass methods, I decided to be member of this forum so that people would help me find the right one for me. I am looking for a method that will show me techniques, fingerings and scale positions etc. on the bass guitar rather than music theory for the beginners.
I would like to specialise mainly in jazz.
I would be very happy if anyone can suggest a method or methods for me.
Thanks

I'd go find a private teacher if I were you. They can show you how to operate the instrument and give feedback on your technique.

There is nothing unique to playing music on bass that is not like bassoon. Except that one instrument is not a farting bedpost.

So you say I can not learn bass guitar if I don't get a private teacher? All I was looking for were some methods.

No, I never said that. Did you read what I posted?

Here's the deal, I'm going to let you in on a 'secret of bass guitar'. Method books, videos and websites exist for only one reason: To make money for the person selling them. They have no vested interest if you learn anything. They give no feedback. They have no personalization. They guarantee nothing and they are a waste of your time and money.

Find a teacher to show you how to operate your bass. And once you have learned that then all music is available to you on bass guitar. There is no difference in Bass Guitar music vs. Bassoon music. I would think a professional musician (bassoonist) would understand that.

If it's books you want, http://www.amazon.com/HEAVY-METAL-BA.../dp/0947183647

That should get you started.

I wouldn't say that method books are completely a waste of time and money, myself. I do think the reader should be mindful that those books are somewhat subjective though, and should probably never be followed as the definitive approach.

As onlyclave said, method books won't give you feedback, or identify where you can improve your technique. You can develop as bass player without a teacher, but a teacher is the best way to identify and correct those things without a lot of trial and error.

Also you might want to go and buy a fingerless leather glove...
